Oh my it's been awhile

After putting the garden to bed (I love that phrase) by cutting down long and lanky flower leaves, digging out the intruders as I like to call them and planning where to plant bulbs (which is easier than planting them I assure you) it's time to refocus my energies outward.

Recently I found this in the news. An Arizona news media page called AZCentral.com written by Nancy Puffer for The Republic sites the rise of Paganism in the Southeast of the state. It seems there is a growing trend for people to migrate to following a nature based religion. It's an article worth reading especially in these times of our country being torn apart by the religious right.

One interesting paragraph caught my eye. I had no idea the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs officially "recognized" the pentagram as a symbol of worship. Good for them I say. To read the entire article please go to Rise in paganism in Southeast mirrors US trend on AZCentral.com.

Blue Moon Goddess

Made from the blue lapis lazuli stone the Blue Moon Goddess was carved. She raises her arms above her head to hold the moon in place in the sky. In Ancient Egypt lapis lazuli was used for making amulets and especially scarabs it was also used in powder form such as that found in the eye shadow used by Cleopatra. For those who believe stones have power you would use lapis lazuli to regain connections to what is important to you and intuitive clarity.

A few changes & additions at Gaia Designs

I've been revamping old designs and adding new merchandise to Gaia Designs as of late. When I had first opened my shop I knew very little of how to use the designs to their best potential nor how to use the designing functions Zazzle had to offer. So as I go along and make changes I will post of my progress here.

After the introduction last week of the Avery shipping labels available to us, I've started creating return address labels & address labels you can customize or add the text from your own home computer. As I am in the process of working on my Nature Shop I started creating these labels and adding them up for sale.

Thus I have created the "Labels for Shipping" line located in the Stationery line. Also new is the "Gift Labels & More" line. There, in time, you'll be able to find customizable shipping labels used for various tasks. Many of us bake or cook for gits. And it is a nice touch to have a pretty unique gift label able to stick on plastic or boxes.

The Oaken Triad

I want to share with you my blessing for Father Oak. The Oaken Triad is created with a watercolor and poem of my own creation. The painting (3 Oaks) is of an Autumn yellow mature leaf, green young leaf and three nut brown acorns on top.

Penticles and Pentagrams

Pentacles and Pentagrams have been used are believed to originate as a symbol for the worship of Kore (a.k.a. Car, Cara, Carnac, Ceres, Core, Kar, Karnak, Kaur, Kauri, Ker, Kerma, Kher, Kore, Q're, etc.). Kore's sacred fruit is the apple and when cut horizontally the seeds' pattern make up the pentagram.

The symbol was used by the ancient Coptic Christians, Jews, Modern Christianity (did you know the pentagram was used to represent the Star of Bethlehem?) until the burning times when millions went wrongfully to their death and the meaning of the pentagram changed. It began to symbolize a goat's head the devil in the form of Baphomet.

"The folk-symbol of security - for the first time in history - was equated with evil and was called the Witch's Foot."

Now that times have changed we can wear our religious symbols proudly where ever religion is practiced freely. Below you'll find my newest design celebrating the pentagram. I've used a Celtic circle surrounded by small green leaves. Inside the circle is the pentagram the same color as the Celtic circle. Samhain is coming

Samhain seems so far away but it creeps in like fog on the shore. There are those who are unaware of what the modern witch is. What does it mean to call oneself a witch. Do we worship Satan? I hear these questions all the time and upon visiting Salem, Massachusetts last week, it was apparent many people know very little about the modern witch.

The Dawn Redwood (also known as the Metasequoia) was thought to be extinct for millions of years until a Chinese forester found over 1000 trees in a less than ideal growing habitat in 1941. There are only a few areas in the US primarily located in small pockets of the Northeastern and Southern regions. So how did I come upon these two cones? I found a Dawn Redwood growing in a neighbors yard! With it's strangely twisted peeling bark this tree can grow up to 90 feet tall. Grand Opening - Evergreen Wood

I'd like to announce the grand opening of a new venture for me. As you may know I have two Zazzle shops Lasgalen Arts and Gaia Designs. Yesterday I officially opened a new shop called Evergreen Wood.

In Evergreen Wood you'll find a fantasy theme. Right now I am working on Elves to present for the whole family. Currently there is the Elven Lady and Elven Lord lines. You'll see the designs are Celtic in inspiration. For role playing or home uses these items are unique and totally customizable. You know how I am so very fond of Tolkien's Elves and I believe in doing something I love.

Recently I had the pleasure of reading my friends blog entitled The Nature School. Her love of nature and the ability to teach 9th graders without a nervous break down has inspired her to start a journal for those want to teach their children about the natural world around them.

The content is sometimes humorous and always informative as she winds her way through life as if with a bugs eye view of the world. This is to say she is very observant and sees things in the big picture.

I recommend this blog for those interested in nature or who have children and would like them to understand more about what happens in the yard and in the forests around them.

It feels as though spring has come though the calendar says otherwise. I woke this morning to birds singing and a milky white sunrise. My tulips have started to rise from their slumbers. I know the animal world is just to excited and have forgotten it's only early March. We'll have snow before to long and all of us will be disappointed until another warm day.

I've been thinking of the sun as of late for obvious reasons. One can understand the ancients admiration for the sun when we are awakened to spring, or the heat during an August day becomes relentless.

Un plug and live

Recently this past weekend I found I had a family. It seems in my earlier days I got married and then had children. How did I find this out you ask? Well actually, ever since last years snow storm which knocked our electricity out I had forgotten about them. It took another mini-disaster with no electricity for 60+ hours which forced me off my cyber habits to reconnect with them again.

In the early stages of being thrown back in time (domestic wise) the worry sets in on how to function without modern conveniences of electricity and running water. And then after you remember how life used to be when you were a child camping in the wilds with family do you feel in the swing boiling water on the wood stove, menu planning with very little resources and bathing out of a Tupperware tub, life falls into a different groove. It's not until the children realize their electronic game device needs charging or the TV is non-existent that the panic begins.

Nightly board and cards games are essential for sanity. You can learn a lot about those you live with when you play games with them. There's a connectedness that happens when you interact with those on a personal level without all the distractions of modern day life.

Friends step up in these times of uncertainty. We received offers for hot showers or water for cooking, hot cooked meals along with other necessities. That's really when you find out who your friends are.

We survived the ordeal by laughing a lot and worrying about those who didn't have the extra help from a wood stove or hot water. We grieved to see so many old growth pine snap in two at the knees, taking with them man's maze of wires leaving us dependent on ourselves and learning lessons we'd forgotten or just don't practice any longer.

Would I knowingly do it again, I think so. Anything to make us remember that we are dependent on one another and the contacts we make with our families and friends are as essential as breathing.

Rune masters held high positions of importance in Viking societies. Rune casting was also a skill they possessed as it was the art of divination. One method was to write runes on pieces of bark, through them to the ground and three pieces were picked at random which were then 'read" (as the Tarot are read) to the client asking the question. Another more familiar method was used with runes painted on pebbles which than were mixed in a bag or pouch. The runes than thrown to the ground were read using only those pebbles with the runes facing up.

The next installment will be how rune stones were used in war and as memorials.

Berkano (or sometimes found as Berkana) is represented by the Birch tree and the letter 'B'. It is a feminine Goddess symbol but know by ancient ways of the Goddess Idun and to represent for fertility and Spring.

Also by modern divination to be birth, general fertility, both mental and physical and personal growth, liberation. Regenerative power and light of spring, renewal, promise of new beginnings, new growth. Arousal of desire. A love affair or new birth. The prospering of an enterprise or venture.

This letter is the next of my rune endeavors. I dreamt last night of Idun and it was in black and white. Her hair was alive with the wind. I have captured her with simple black watercolor paints and below you can see the results. I also have another stone to share. Rune Masters

The information we know now regarding the ancient rune masters comes primarily from the Vikings. The upper class were trained in the supernatural powers of divination and spell casting of the runes magic. However, specially trained men were used to do daily and powerful rune castings of magic. It was, of course, serious business and not taken lightly. One Viking poet wrote, "Let no man carve runes to cast a spell, save first he learns to read them well."

Viking poems gave us all we know about rune casting and there have been some amazing stories found in the ancient text. One story goes a not so experienced rune master carved a spell on a whalebone to hang over a woman's bed to protect her. Instead the spell was ill used and almost killed the woman. Another tale is of a rune master carving protective spells on his drinking gourd and when a rival master tries to add poison in his drinking vessel the gourd broke in two saving the rune masters life.

The next installment regarding rune masters will be about divination and it's uses.

Origination of Runes

Although scholars disagree on the origination of the runic alphabet, they do agree runes most likely were first created in the first century out of an existing alphabet. One popular belief for origination came from the Etruscan written language. The Etruscans proximity found in northern Italy and the northern European Germanic tribes most likely were indeed in contact with each other for commerce reasons. Also a few of the Etruscan alphabet letters are very similar to several runes.

Another popular theory, is of course, the Latin alphabet was the originating influence for runes. The Roman Empire being who they are would also have been prevalent in Northern Europe. Could the Germanic tribes have borrowed ideas and incorporated them for their own alphabet?

Futhark

Futhark get's it's name from the first six letters (f, u, th, a, r, k) of the rune alphabet. Each one of the 24 runes has it's own unique phonetic sound and also has mystical means which the Scandinavians gave them. Although scholars believe that early humans used the runes for communication, it wasn't until the Vikings were they used for magic and divination. Now, for the most part, they are used for divination and their meanings have changed to mirror Tarot cards and other useful sooth saying tools.

As of late I have been having dreams. I believe this is how my muse communicates to me and they've been quite busy at night. I see words, pictures and hear songs in my sleep. An image came to me there, of a sun with curly cue rays and spirals. I saw a lightning bolt too. This had sparked an interest in runes and as I learned more I saw my lightning bolt during my search. The overwhelming urge to paint took me yesterday and I painted what I saw in my dream.

Sowilo or 's' in the runic alphabet is a powerful letter. It represents the sun. My astrological sign is Leo and I believe this has something to do with my dreams and urgings to create the sowilo symbol. This was it's outcome.

Another sowilo design came to me as well as the above one however, I've run out of paint. Such a dilemma when you muse is poking your in the back. The paint (or lack there of) situation will be rectified tomorrow and I will have to pursue the calling once again.
